The Anatomy Of Sperm WhalesProf. Malcolm Clarke, a world expert on Sperm Whales and Giant Squid, speaks from his Whale Museum on Pico in the Azores about the anatomy of sperm whales. Includes a discussion of water and air holes, sound generation, the size of the brain and heart and the digestive system which includes 4 stomachs and is responsible for the creation of ambergris, an excretory product made from the beaks of giant squids. A sample of ambergris is shown. Ambergris has extraordinary properties of smell retention and has consequently been used in the world's finest perfumes. The Anatomy Of Pygmy Sperm WhalesProfessor Malcolm Clarke talks about his research into Pygmy Sperm Whales. At one time critics of his research into the function of the Spermacetti in the regular sperm whales, contested that the spermacetti in Pygmy Sperm Whales was evidence against his ideas. Professor Clarke investigated the Pygmy Sperm Whale and discovered that the spermacetti is used for quite a different function. Reasons for the Whale Museum, and Development of Clarke's interest in Sperm WhalesProf. Malcolm Clarke, a world expert on Sperm Whales and Giant Squid, speaks from his Whale Museum on Pico in the Azores about how his interest in whales was initially aroused, and how his research into the spermacetti of whales has led to a greater understanding of how whales negotiate the extreme differences in pressure, temperature and light when the move from the surface to the depths of the ocean to feed, and back again. Also discusses how his study of giant squid was made much easier by investigating the stomachs of one of there biggest predators, the sperm whale. Built on the clift tops over-looking the deep blue mid-atlantic azorean sea, this full-size sculpture model of the silhouette of the largest sperm whale ever caught in the Azores is breath-taking. You can walk up and down inside the model, and experience what it must have been like for Jonah inside the whale. Clarke continues showing us around his museum, and discusses more of what is known about what it is like to be a whale.
